Terrain map guide

Use the editor for places where the terrain carries the memory.

The strongest custom terrain maps usually start with a place that has recognizable shape: a ridge, island, river bend, coastline, old neighborhood, ski area, lake, or city grid. For more examples, compare city and terrain maps or browse the gallery before choosing the area you want to model.

Real elevation, framed deliberately

MapCraft uses terrain data to build a raised model from the area you choose. The preview is most useful when you leave enough surrounding land for slopes, shorelines, streets, or water edges to make the finished relief readable at a glance.

Different places need different framing. A square works well for cities and balanced landscapes, a circle can make a single summit or lake feel centered, and a hexagon gives coastlines, ridges, and compact scenes a more graphic edge.
